What a Testing Day Actually Looks Like

Before I Arrive

  • You send me a VIN list — a photo of a spreadsheet is fine
  • I check engine model years against OBD eligibility
  • I flag any pre-2013 engines that need opacity testing
  • We agree a window and where to stage the trucks

7:30 AM — Setup

Timing It Around Crush and the Build Season

Wine country and construction both run on seasons, and both seasons are terrible times to lose a truck for half a day.

From veraison through the end of crush, a winery's gondolas, forklifts, flatbeds, and water trucks are committed. Nobody is sending a hauler down-valley for an emissions test in the middle of a pick. On the construction side it's the dry months — when the dirt work, paving, and framing all compress into the same window and every dump truck and boom truck is spoken for.

The 90-day early submission window is what solves this. You can file a passing Clean Truck Check up to 90 days ahead of your deadline, which means you get to choose when in that quarter the testing happens.

So we schedule around your season, not against it. Test the winery fleet in the quiet stretch before harvest ramps. Test the construction fleet during the wet weeks when equipment is already sitting. Same price either way — the only thing that changes is whether it costs you a working day.

No. Everything happens where the truck is parked — a yard, a crush pad, a gravel staging area, a jobsite. The test runs with the engine at idle and a scanner on the diagnostic port. No bay, no lift, no power hookup needed.

Realistically three to four an hour once I'm set up, so a dozen units is comfortably a half day. There's no cap — larger fleets just get scheduled across a longer window or split across two mornings, whichever disrupts your operation less.

Engines from 2012 and older need a SAE J1667 smoke opacity test rather than the OBD scan, and we don't currently carry a smoke meter.
