First: Do You Actually Need This?

A surprising number of coach owners get told they need a Clean Truck Check when they don't. Three things have to be true at once.

Your motorhome has to be registered in California, it has to run on diesel or an alternative fuel, and it has to be over 14,000 lbs GVWR. Miss any one of those and the program doesn't apply to you.

The big one is registration. CARB specifically excludes motorhomes registered outside California — so if your coach is registered in Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, Montana, or anywhere else, you are not in this program, no matter how much time you spend in the state. We would rather tell you that on the phone than take $110 from you for a test you never needed.

Gas coaches are out too. This program covers diesel and alternative fuel only.

The Engine-Year Trap on Coaches

Which test your coach needs is set by the engine model year, not the year on your registration. On motorhomes those two numbers are almost never the same.

Chassis get built, then sit, then get coached out and titled. A two- or three-year gap is completely normal, which means a 2015 coach very often carries a 2012 engine — and that single year changes which test applies.

Diesel engines 2013 and newer take the OBD scan, which is what we perform. Engines 2012 and older require a SAE J1667 smoke opacity test, and we don't currently carry a smoke meter.

Find the emissions control label on the engine — usually on the valve cover or a nearby surface. Snap a photo and text it to us at 707-225-7982 and we'll read it for you before anyone drives anywhere.

Common Questions

Only if it's registered in California, runs on diesel or alternative fuel, and is over 14,000 lbs GVWR. If your motorhome is registered in another state, CARB explicitly excludes it from Clean Truck Check — you don't need this test, even if you spend the winter here. That one fact saves a lot of people a lot of money.

Annually — not every six months. Motorhomes are on a yearly compliance schedule rather than the semi-annual schedule most commercial trucks follow. And when OBD-equipped commercial trucks move to quarterly testing in October 2027, non-commercial motorhomes stay annual. One test a year is the whole obligation.

Almost always the coach's engine model year, not the year on the title — and on a motorhome those are frequently two or three years apart, because chassis sit before they're built out. A 2015 coach can easily have a 2012 engine. Diesel engines 2013 and newer take the OBD scan we perform. 2012 and older need a smoke opacity test, which we don't currently offer. Yes, and that's usually easiest for everyone. We test at storage lots, RV parks, your driveway, or wherever the coach is parked across Napa, Sonoma, and Solano counties. Most coaches are stored somewhere inconvenient to drive out of, which is exactly the problem mobile testing solves.

If several coaches at the same storage facility go together, everyone pays the $80 fleet rate with no travel fee — three is all it takes. Talk to your neighbors or your storage manager and we'll do them in one visit. It's the cheapest way to do this by a wide margin.
