3+ trucks: Travel fee waived
There are two separate costs in this program, and mixing them up is the single most common billing confusion we run into.
The test fee is what you pay a credentialed tester to perform the inspection and file the result. That's our $80.
The CARB compliance fee is $32.13 per vehicle per year, paid directly to CARB inside your CTC-VIS account. It is not paid to us, we never touch it, and paying us does not pay it. CARB recalculates it against the California Consumer Price Index and publishes any change by July 1 each year, effective the following January.
So a single truck's realistic annual cost right now is roughly the CARB fee plus two tests. Budget it that way and nothing surprises you.
Test fees only. The $32.13 CARB compliance fee is per vehicle per year, on top, paid to CARB.
An OBD emissions inspection performed on site by a CARB-credentialed tester, the result filed directly to CTC-VIS before we leave, and a clear answer about where your truck stands.
If it passes, you're done and it's recorded. If it doesn't, you get a plain-English readout of exactly what triggered the failure, and a free retest as long as you schedule it within 30 days.
One thing we don't currently do: smoke opacity testing. Engines from 2012 and older need a SAE J1667 opacity test rather than an OBD scan, and we don't yet carry a smoke meter. We'll tell you that on the phone rather than after we've driven out. Here's what to do if that's your truck →

$80 per truck, plus a flat $30 travel fee for the visit. One truck is $110 all-in. At three or more trucks in one location the travel fee is waived entirely, so it's $80 per truck. That's the whole price list — it's the same in Calistoga as it is in Benicia, and there's no distance surcharge, no fuel surcharge, and no after-hours upcharge.
No — and this trips up a lot of owners. The $32.13 annual compliance fee is paid directly to CARB through your CTC-VIS account, not to us. It's a separate, per-vehicle, per-year charge that CARB adjusts for inflation each July. Our $80 covers performing the emissions test and filing the result. Anyone quoting you a single number that supposedly covers both is either absorbing the CARB fee or hasn't explained it clearly.
Yes. The fee covers the inspection itself, which we performed either way. But if your truck fails, you get a full readout of what triggered it, and the retest is free as long as it's scheduled within 30 days of the original test. Fix the fault, call us back inside that window, and you don't pay twice.
Because most testers price by route, not by job. If someone is driving in from an hour or two away, what they charge you depends on how full that day's route is and how far off it you are — so they can't post a number. We're based in the North Bay and we're not running a long route, so the number doesn't move. Posting it is easier than explaining it.
We take cash, check, Zelle, and all major cards. Fleet accounts can be invoiced with net terms — if you're testing several trucks a couple of times a year, ask about setting that up so you're not handling payment at the truck every visit.
